Zen Archer Style

Most martial artists fight in melee, using their fists, feet, and weapons. Some instead fight using a bow, seeking perfection in the flex of his bow’s limbs, the tautness of its bowstring, and the unerring path of an arrow.

Weapons and Armor: A practitioner of this style treats bows and powerbows as form weapons. Zen Archers may not wear any armor with a mobility penalty.

The first technique a Zen Archer must learn is to sense the pull of his bow. Each mote spent on this Charm increases the range of the Archer’s bow by 10% (to a maximum increase of 50%) until his next action.

A Zen Archer is practiced not only in sensing his own arrows, but the arrows of others as well. Each mote spent on this Charm increases the Archer’s DV against a ranged attack by 1, to a maximum of (Essence).

A Zen Archer’s body must be as taut as his bowstring, and his movements reflect it. When activating this Charm, the Archer makes an attack roll with his bow, though he does not target a foe. Instead, the number of successes are added to his Dash speed (see Exalted pg. 143), and he moves up to that distance immediately. With the expenditure of an additional mote, the Archer is not limited to running along the ground, instead leaping with the grace of a loosed arrow. This allows him to jump his enhanced Dash speed in any direction. This Charm is Obvious when used to jump. This action counts as a Martial Arts or Archery attack for the purposes of Charms that reduce the speed or DV penalty for such actions, as well as for Extra Action Charms which restrict the type of action taken.

ZEN ARCHER FORM

Communing with the least god of his bow, the Zen Archer gains a level of understanding beyond
ordinary mortals, with the weapon seeming to be an extension of the Archer’s body.

With this Charm active, the Archer may attack and defend with his bow as quickly and easily as a mortal can with his fists. When firing his bow, Accuracy and Rate are increased by 1 and Speed is decreased by 1. Also, the Archer can strike foes with the bow itself, treating it as a Martial Arts weapon (Speed 5, Accuracy +1, Damage +0L, Defense +2, Rate 3), and gaining magical material bonuses if applicable. The Archer may freely switch between wielding his bow in two hands and holding it in one hand, allowing him to mix punches and bow attacks as he wishes.

Finally, the Archer treats his bow to be part of himself in any instance he wishes to – he cannot be unwillingly disarmed of his bow, though he can choose to stow or drop it; he can choose to take damage that would otherwise be dealt to his bow; and so forth.

MOMENT OF THE MIGHTY SHOT

A Zen Archer can coax more force from his bowstring than observers would think possible, pushing his bow to its limits before firing at the last moment. Every two motes spent on this Charm turns a die of damage into an automatic level of damage in Step 10. This cannot affect more dice than the Archer’s Essence.

A Zen Archer is able to sense the exact moment he is Fated to loose his shot, striking at the perfect moment. This Charm can only be activated while Zen Archer Form is active. While this Charm is active, when rolling damage in Step 8 for an Archery attack, the Archer may roll twice and choose which result to keep.

A Zen Archer has no need to fumble about with his ammunition, firing only one arrow at a time. Instead, he draws and fires many arrows at once, as he lashes out at his enemies in a single, unnaturally fluid motion. This Charm is a magical flurry of two or more Martial Arts or Archery attacks, costing two motes per attack. As part of this flurry, the Archer may pay an additional mote to reflexively draw a Martial Arts or Archery weapon. When this Charm is used to attack in both hand-to-hand combat and at range, it gains the Obvious keyword.

When a Zen Archer fights, his foes have no time to find respite from his attacks. This Charm can only be activated while Zen Archer Form is active. While this Charm is active, the onslaught penalties enemies suffer from the Archer’s Martial Arts and Archery attacks are doubled.

Though most archers prefer to attack safely from afar, a Zen Archer is deadliest when utilizing his bow in melee, when he is able to maneuver around to strike at a weak point. This Charm supplements a bow attack made at hand-to-hand range. If the attack deals damage, the target suffers a Crippling injury which applies an internal penalty to all rolls involving Physical Attributes. The penalty is equal to the number of health levels inflicted by the attack, and it is reduced by 1 whenever the target’s DV refreshes. Half the penalty from this charm (rounded up) is also applied to the target’s static dice ratings which use Physical Attributes.

By weaving about and shooting his bow in melee, a Zen Archer can attack from unexpected angles, keeping his foes off-balance. This Charm can only be activated while Zen Archer Form is active. While this Charm is active, any bow attack made at hand-to-hand range that strikes its target (regardless of whether or not damage is dealt) inflicts a -1 penalty to all physical DVs. This penalty lasts until the Archer’s next action, and it is cumulative up to the Archer’s Essence.

A true Zen Archer is able to continue the fight, regardless of adverse conditions. This Charm reduces the penalties for an unarmed or bow attack. Reducing internal penalties costs one mote per reduction of the penalty. Reducing external penalties costs two motes per reduction of the penalty. This Charm gains the Obvious keyword when used to reduce an external penalty.

A Zen Archer is able to split his mind in two, committing one half to attack and one to defense. This Charm permanently enhances Zen Archer Form. This Charm can only be activated while Zen Archer Form is active. While this Charm is active, the Archer suffers no DV penalty for attacks made with unarmed strikes or his bow, and he gains a +1 bonus to all DVs while holding a bow.

An experienced Zen Archer can fell entire armies in a moment. This Charm supplements an Archery attack, allowing the Archer to attack up to (Martial Arts + Archery + Essence) targets. He makes a single attack roll and applies it against all targets of the attack. This attack cannot be applied to a single person or human-sized object multiple times, but it can be applied multiple times to military units and larger objects. Ammunition is required for each target of the attack, although if Zen Archer Form is active, ammunition is not required for targets in hand-to-hand range, as the Archer can strike such targets with his bow itself. This Charm requires a surcharge of one Willpower when attacking more than (Martial Arts) targets.

An experienced Zen Archer understands that no warrior can stand alone – protecting one’s allies is necessary in the heat of battle. When an attack is declared against one of the Archer’s allies in Step 1, this Charm allows the Archer to make a single, reflexive bow attack against the attacker. If this reflexive attack hits, the number of net successes is applied as an external penalty to the triggering attack. The damage of this reflexive attack cannot be enhanced by Charms, and this Charm cannot be used again until the Archer’s DV refreshes.

A true master of Zen Archery can entreat the least god of his bow to lend some of its own power into a single, mighty shot that can penetrate even the toughest defenses. The Archer makes a single, unblockable attack with his bow. If the attack hits, the target’s soak from armor is reduced by 4, and threshold successes on the attack are doubled when determining damage. In addition, if the attack’s damage is not stopped by Hardness, the target is automatically knocked back (Essence + Martial Arts) yards.

The finality of this attack, however, is enforced by the bow’s least god. This Charm cannot be used more than once in a single scene. If this Charm is countered by a perfect defense or perfect soak, it does not count toward the once per scene limit, as the bow’s least god will not allow such petty technicalities to steal its wielder’s moment of glory.
